ELECTRIC BIKES - HYBRID & FOLDERS
Electric bikes have made giant leaps in performance in recent years due to lithium batteries and improved motor technologies.
A premium quality electric bike will give you fantastic performance.
We're blessed with wonderful countryside in Derbyshire, but of course extremely hilly - an electric bike can transform your riding experience by making the hills actually very easy if you choose maximum assistance from the motor.
We have demonstrator bikes available and if you are thinking of buying it's a good idea to try a demonstrator first
to make sure the bike does what you want it to. You're not likely to be disappointed - most people are full of smiles after their first go on an E-bike !
BATTERIES
It's easiest to think of the different battery sizes as being like the amount of fuel in your car's tank. It doesn't effect how well you go up a hill, but it dictates the number of miles you can go before a top-up.
The battery is a major part of the cost of an E-bike and many of our bikes will have a choice of battery sizes.
The size ( or, more correctly, the "capacity") is measured in Watt-hours (Wh) and can range from 250 up to over 700Wh.
As you will have guessed, the bigger batteries cost you more money, but we normally recommend at least 500Wh for long, hilly rides.
Over recent years we have sold lots of Trek Bosch-powered bikes with 500Wh batteries and we commonly hear customers telling us they can do a 40 mile quite hilly ride and still have useful power left.
But as well as the hillyness of the route, your range will be affected a lot by how much help you need, which will depend on your weight and fitness.
We have a customer who gets over 100 miles range to each battery charge but she is reasonably light weight and rides mainly on the High Peak trail, so she is not asking a lot out of the battery.
A heavier rider doing a much hillier route (such as the Matlock/Chesterfield commute) would not get 40 miles unless they are very fit and don't have to ask for too much assistance !
MOTORS
How powerful your E-bike is up a hill depends on its motor, rather than battery size.
Motor power rating can be confusing. UK-legal bikes nearly all have a "nominal power" of 250W, but this is fairly meaningless as all sorts of different motors have this.
They will all do approx 15.5 mph on the flat, which is the legal limit for an E-bike, but their hill climbing abilities can be hugely different.
The most useful measurement is the motor's "torque", measured in Newton-metres (Nm). You will find this very much relates to how strong the bike feels up a steep hill.
Our E-bike motors range from 40Nm upwards.
The 40Nm motors are usually fitted in the rear wheel. The more powerful motors are fitted into the bike frame.
Our most powerful motor is the Bosch CX, with 85Nm. It is a great hill-climber and is fitted to many of our Trek e-bikes, including the Allant+5 and Allant+7.
( Bosch actually make 5 different motors, at differing prices and power outputs, but the CX is the best of the bunch )
COST
Trek E-bikes with powerful Bosch motors are typically over £2500.
As a cheaper, but excellent value-for-money brand, we are stocking WISPER bikes, which have an impressive build quality and style for their price.
They start from around £1500.
WEIGHT
There's no denying E-bikes are a bit porky to lift, though you don't feel it when you're riding them. Just the opposite really, because of all that help from the motor.
But Trek and Whyte do both make lighter weight bikes, which are easier to lift than the main range.
It's important to note they both have small batteries of 250Wh and rear wheel motors,
so their range and hill-climbing isn't as good as the heavier bikes, but ultimately it all depends on what you need -
if you don't need a lot of assistance then they may interest you. The Treks and Whytes are both around the £2000 mark.
Trek do the Dual Sport+ and FX+ models.
Whyte have their brand new RHe0. Strange name but a very classy bike. Our favourite at Stanley Fearn's !

For Derbyshire, with our big hills, we like powerful motors in our E-bikes !
Within Trek's hybrid range you will find 3 different motors -
The Verve +1 has the Bosch Active Line 40Nm motor.
This is Bosch's most commonly used motor, fitted to many different brands' bikes,
but for our hills, we strongly recommend you go for a more powerful motor than this...
In the Verve +2 and +3, you get the Bosch Performance Line Cruise 65Nm motor - this is noticeably better up the hills.
The Allant +5 and +7 are even better - you get the top-spec Performance CX 85Nm motor, as used in Trek mountain bikes !
